SOUNDWAVE .004 Artist Showcase:
Aris Ford // Listen Here
Nailed as The Reverend of Campfire Hymns, Aris Ford blends an eclectic style of blues and folk guitar picking with melodic layers of vocals and well-thought lyrics. His acoustic guitar and sincere voice are often accompanied by a Hohner harmonica to soothe the soul. Chilling guitar lines and ethereal vocals on tracks like "Sleepwalker" and "Coming Clean" evoke heart wrenching realizations before lyrics reveal their true intentions. Other tracks like "Please Come Home" and "Love on Canvas" offer pop melodies and vocals with a more upbeat tempo with influences from the likes of John Mayer and William Fitzsimmons. Many of his songs were written in places like Big Sur and Yosemite National Park under the mighty mountains and tall redwood groves where he finds inspiration and solace. Tracks like "City Lights" document a long journey into the night to find the dawn of a new day rising. No matter which song, you are sure to find a sound you'll connect with on a personal level.
Kleinahexa // Listen here
Kleinahexa is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Kyara Kalb. Drawing inspiration from Joni Mitchell and Elliott Smith as much as David Bowie and The Velvet Underground, they've cultivated a warm sound any fan of melancholy songcraft can enjoy. The heartfelt instrumentation is coupled with to-die-for four part vocal harmonies and the songs all feel like a friendly arm around the shoulder. There's also a conscious desire for Kleinahexa to push the boundaries for women in general. Even if the songs are more Carole King than Kathleen Hanna, the heart of the group is one beating for feminine empowerment. If you've ever wanted a band with the spirit of riot grrl filtered through the downbeat, hazy and homey sound of Laurel Canyon, you owe it to yourself to hear Kleinahexa.
De Palma // Listen here
De Palma is a time traveling act that merges their contemporary rock/pop and post-grunge upbringing with the inventiveness of frontman Magdiel Montano, whose creative outlet pours dark-wave synths and ambient guitars into an energetic interpretation of his own sound. Although born in Mexico, Magdiel was mostly raised in New York before moving to California at age 16. His family recalls him showing interest in singing, dancing and even writing music since he was a child. Growing up he learned how to write his own songs using the family guitar and piano; often inspired by artists such as The Cure, Depeche Mode and Radiohead. Once in California, a local musical crowd had noticed him for his abilities on the drums, which he had more recently learned. This led him to joining the band “York” in 2010. With them he toured along the west coast of the country, and returned with expanded ideas about music and his life. Now In “De Palma”, where Magdiel is the primary songwriter, we see a true experimentation of styles he has encountered throughout his journey, and products like “Synthetic”, which display a fun yet raw transformation of 80’s nostalgia.
